Balboa has a unique wrinkle, in that is has the same qqs rhythm, but it is shifted on the count depending on if you’re doing a balboa basic - up or balboa basic - down.

Note on quicks and slows: Verbalizations in Dance

Standards

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Q S Q Q S Q - up basic
Q Q S Q Q S - down basic

When initially learning, switch between the two can be extremely confusing, because it is usually taught as counts and the rhythm mixing isn’t obvious at first. Even worse, sometimes it a vocalized as quick quick slow the entire time.

A toss out - and come around is so confusing because it mixes an up basic and down basic, mixing the two rhythms.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Q Q S Q S Q
around open

Continuing with the toss out and then closing, mixes it again.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Q Q S Q S Q
turn close

QQS and QSQ

Though it can be qqs, but just shifted, because of the shift, I would argue they really are two different rhythms.

Quicks and Triples

At any point you can inject more quicks, mix and match quicks and slows, and even throw in balboa basic - triple|triples.
